I do most of my riding solo in rural areas, so like to usually have a few tools handy. For the pouch I use a pistol soft case. They are cheap, and come in different sizes so you'll find just the right one. This one is roughly 9" x 6". Great for under seat areas on some bikes, or you can stick it in a tank bag, or even one of the small solo bags. They are compact, and keep the tools from rattling around.
They open up flat for easy access.
The tools I carry can vary, but here is some of what I'll usually have. Tools that have multiple uses, or fit different sizes save space in a tool kit. Vice-grips can be handy if you need a third hand. A crescent wrench and adjustable socket wrench aren't the sort of tools you would normally use in the garage, but for a roadside repair will do, and saves space over carrying different size wrenches.
Zip ties can come in handy. Electrical tape can be more useful than duct tape.
Every guy loves multi-tools, and they are space savers. I really don't use them for anything else, so buy cheap ones. The big one below was $5 at Big Lots.
Allen wrenches for cap screws, pressure gauge, and a few other tools.
