I did some fiberglass repair on the seat base. Very sturdy, but it looks like it has been on at least a couple of bikes from all of the holes in it, which is probably why it was only $10. First I taped the topside of the holes with masking tape.
I then filled the holes with resin and covered the bad areas with a couple layers of woven fiberglass. Here it is fixed up and the four new mounting holes drilled.
I use a capacitor instead of a battery, and it will get mounted to the rear mount cross piece.
I pop riveted an aluminum panel on the underside to mount the reg/rec and CDI box. This gets them as out of sight as possible.
The seat pan is aluminum, getting started on it here.
This is how the seat pan and base will bolt on. Starting will some 16 gauge steel, drill for the mounting bolts, then some smaller holes for pop rivets.
Next the bolt heads are welded to the 16 gauge, a quick paint job, and riveted to the seat pan. The front three bolts go to the frame, and the rear two just to the base. The pad will go around the rear tank mount, rather than cover it, so that the seat won't need to be removed to take the tank off.
The pad will be a firm closed cell foam. I bought a package of four 18" square 1/2" thick pieces.
Getting it trimmed to shape here, using two layers for 1" thickness. An inline sander with 40 grit paper works great for the final shaping. Once I'm happy with it I'll take it in for upholstery.
