This is the site of a rather obscure piece of Cold War history here in Indiana, the Cairo Skywatch Tower. Part of a civilian volunteer program named Operation Skywatch run by the USAF, this tower designated DL3-G was put up in 1952 and manned 24 hours a day to keep a lookout for Soviet bombers. This was before the US had a nationwide radar system. In 1976 a memorial was put up to commemorate those who served in the program.
